Job Description

Salary Range: $41.15 - $58.98

 

The Charge Nurse reports to and supports the Medicine Program Manager in the coordination of the daily operations of the clinical unit. This leadership role is responsible and accountable for departmental goals and objectives while maintaining high quality focused patient and family- centered care. The Charge Nurse assists or facilitates team members to coordinate and integrate services using the resources of a Multi-Disciplinary team to provide efficient patient flow and care excellence delivery.

 

This leadership role utilizes clinical expertise to work in collaboration with the Physicians and multidisciplinary team to facilitate patient care, discharge planning, departmental communication, staffing, assignments, and patient flow. In collaboration with the Medicine Program Manager, the successful applicant will play a key role to lead in the implementation of unit goals, quality performance and safety standards.

 

This is a full-time position working 12 hour day shifts including every other weekend. It is expected that this nurse will work within full scope of practice, providing direct patient care when required. The physical demands of the role may include but are not limited to prolonged sitting, standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing and pulling. 

 

This position is not a Supervisor for the purpose of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its corresponding obligations and liabilities.

 

Posted hours do not constitute a guarantee that shifts will not be subject to change.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare assignments among team members that are consistent with the member's knowledge, skill, and scope of practice.
  • Assess departmental human resource needs during the shift and readjust assignments as needed.
  • Act as a resource and role model for team members communicating appropriate knowledge, skills and judgment.
  • Adapt to changing workloads, collaborating with colleagues hospital-wide regarding adjusting priorities.
  • Contribute to ensuring there is a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors.
  • Participate in departmental committees as necessary.
  • Ensure quality and safety audits are completed daily or as required. 
  • Facilitates staff to attend educational opportunities in hospital
  • Initiates review of incident reports; initial inquiry, collection of facts and root cause analysis
  • Supports the team to ensure active coordination of patient flow into and out of the department
  • Collaborates with the hospital support services to ensure resources meet the unit needs
  • Works in compliance of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and its regulations, reporting hazards, deficiencies and contraventions of the Act in a timely manner.
  • Performs cross-functional and/or other duties consistent with the job classification, as assigned or requested 
  • Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis is required

Required Skills and Qualifications:

 

  • Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses in Ontario (CNO) as a Registered Nurse in good standing required 
  • Diploma or Baccalaureate degree in Nursing required
  • Must be currently employed as RN and have recent experience in a Charge Nurse role 
  • Minimum 3-5 years relevant experience required.
  • Current BCLS
  • I.V. trained and certified
  • Certification in central line care
  • Up to date Code White Training
  • Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis is required

Leadership Qualifications and Core Competencies:

  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the clinical needs of the program’s patient population
  • Excellent skills associated with physical assessment, critical thinking and problem solving
  • Sound judgement related to professional nursing practice and working knowledge of interdisciplinary team members’ scope of practice.
  • Exceptional understanding and demonstrated experience in coaching and preceptoring staff
  • Demonstrated leadership skills:
    • Conflict resolution
    • Staff engagement
    • Problem solving
    • Self-direction (takes initiative)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of CMH corporate goals, organizational strategies and priorities; has the ability to mentor and support staff in translation to unit performance indicators and strategic goals
  • Excellent communication skills; including communication with staff, physicians , allied health, patients and families and community partners  
  • Executes duties in a manner that demonstrates the employee’s commitment to developing a culture of patient and staff safety through respect, accountability, reliability, collaboration, trust and teamwork
