Job Description

Salary Range: 41.33 - 58.09

 

 

Position: Registered Nurse – Mental Health Program (Full-Time, Monday to Friday)

 

Position Summary:
As a key member of the Mental Health Program, the Registered Nurse (RN) provides comprehensive psychiatric and mental health care to individuals experiencing severe and persistent mental illness, psychosocial crises, or requiring specialized treatments such as Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), Community Treatment Orders (CTO), Clozapine management and Long Acting injectable (LAI) medications. Care is delivered in accordance with the Canadian Standards of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing.

 

The RN conducts biopsychosocial assessments, formulates safety and treatment plans, identifies goals, implements interventions, and documents outcomes. Responsibilities could include providing care in the injection clinic, supporting ECT procedures (including preparation, monitoring, and recovery), managing inpatient and outpatient referrals, and facilitating education for patients and families. The RN may also support psychiatric consultations within the hospital (CL), psychiatric emergency assessments (PAAN), participate in multidisciplinary rounds, discharge planning, liaising with community agencies to ensure continuity of care and may involve re-assignment to support staffing coverage or responsibilities based on operational needs of the Mental Health Department.

 

This role requires collaboration with psychiatrists, anesthesiologists, the PACU team, medical unit nurses, social work, occupational therapy and other members of the multi disciplinary team.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct comprehensive psychiatric assessments and develop individualized treatment plans.
  • Administer and monitor psychiatric medications, including Clozapine and LAI therapies.
  • Support ECT services, including patient preparation, monitoring, scheduling, and post-treatment care.
  • Manage CTO renewals, reviews, and related documentation in collaboration with the psychiatrist.
  • Provide patient and family education about treatments and recovery processes.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary rounds, discharge planning, and community reintegration.
  • Respond to psychiatric consultation requests from other hospital units including ER (when required)
  • Facilitate risk assessments, de-escalation interventions, and crisis planning.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of care processes and outcomes.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Current Certificate of Registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • CNA certification in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing required
  • Minimum 5–6 years of experience in Mental Health Nursing, including work with severely and persistently mentally ill populations.
  • Strong working knowledge of psychiatric disorders, psychotropic medications, CTOs, Clozapine protocols (including CSAN), and ECT procedures.
  • Proficiency in biopsychosocial assessments, crisis intervention, and care planning.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Familiarity with mental health legislation, including the Mental Health Act, Health Care Consent Act, Substitute Decisions Act, and Privacy legislation.
  • Case management experience and knowledge of community resources.
  • Advanced de-escalation and Code White training.
  • IV skills and Meditech experience considered assets.
  • Regular and reliable attendance required.
