Job Description

Salary Range:  $39.07 - 56.00 

 

The Registered Nurse, Mental Health (MH) provides care to patients from their initial presentation in the Emergency Department (ED), supporting their transition and care to the Inpatient MH Unit through to discharge. The RN works closely with the multi-disciplinary team including psychiatrists, nurses, and other allied healthcare providers. This RN position allows the nurse to provide comprehensive care to MH patients throughout their MH journey. 

 

The RN provides crisis stabilization and care of the patient, as well as collaboration and communication with the Psychiatrist to support timely disposition to discharge or to the Psychiatric Care Unit. Timely facilitation and disposition with priority access to both inpatient and outpatient mental health services for ongoing assessment is the goal.

 

Within the Inpatient MH Unit, the RN provides ongoing assessment, care plan development, provision of treatment and medication as well as discharge planning and linkages with community resources according to patients’ presenting needs. The RN will also perform others duties as required related to their scope of practice.

 

This RN position works all shifts – days, evenings and nights including weekends and statutory holidays. The physical demands of the role may include but are not limited to sitting, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, bending and lifting. This position contributes to ensuring there is a safe environment for patients, staff and visitors in all areas of the hospital.

 

The RN will liaise with the Emergency Department, Inpatient Unit, Day Hospital Program and with the CMH Outpatient Services and other Inpatient Units as needed to provide seamless and appropriate care to those with mental health issues.

 

Posted hours do not constitute a guarantee that shifts will not be subject to change. 

 

 Skills and Qualifications:

  • Current Certificate of Registration with the College of Nurses in Ontario (CNO) as a Registered Nurse in good standing required 
  • Diploma or Baccalaureate degree in Nursing required
  • CNA Certification in Psychiatry and Mental Health or willingness to work towards certification within 2 years is required and must be maintained
  • Minimum of 1-3 years’ recent experience in an acute Schedule 1 Mental Health setting is required
  • Knowledge and experience working with the Mental Health Act of Ontario
  • In-depth knowledge of factors influencing psychiatric symptoms, mental disorders and psychological responses to physical mental illness also required
  • Knowledge of DSM-V diagnostic criteria and somatic therapies required
  • In-depth knowledge of community based, regional mental health and other relevant resources is preferred
  • Exceptional communication, and interpersonal skills are required in order to effectively communicate with patients, public and staff
  • Knowledge and experience working with persons presenting with severe and persistent mental health illness, concurrent disorders and addictions is necessary
  • Code White certification and ability to respond fully during a Code White is required
  • Knowledge of the Ontario Mental Health Reporting System (OMHRS) and Meditech system modules an asset
  • Must demonstrate the ability to integrate discharge planning and appropriate use of community resources as it pertains to MH into the patient’s plan of care
  • Must incorporate knowledge of health promotion as it relates to mental health into the patient’s plan of care
  • Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis is required
